In 2018, National Geographic included it among the best history museums in the world, alongside renowned landmarks like the Auschwitz Museum in Poland and the Louvre in Paris, France.

The Gold Museum, welcomes over 500,000 visitors annually. Established in 1939 and inaugurated in 1959, the museum safeguards more than 34,000 gold pieces and alloys, along with approximately 25,000 objects made of ceramics, stone, shell, bone, and textiles. It houses the largest collection of pre-Hispanic gold artifacts in the world, with highlights including the Quimbaya Poporo and the Muisca Raft.

What to Expect at the Gold Museum in Bogotá

The museum offers four permanent exhibition halls and two temporary exhibition spaces, with bilingual text (Spanish and English) in the permanent galleries. Limited lockers are available for storing belongings. Key Exhibition Rooms:

  • 2nd Floor: The Work of Metals. Learn about ancient mining and metalworking techniques.
  • 2nd Floor:People and Gold in Pre-Hispanic Colombia.Discover the use and cultural significance of metals in political and religious contexts.

  • 4th Floor: The Exploratorium. Engage interactively with Colombia’s diverse heritage and the museum’s preserved artifacts.

Admission Fees for the Gold Museum in Bogotá

  • Tuesday to Saturday: COP $ 5,000
  • Holidays: COP $ 5,000
  • Audioguide Rental: COP $ 8,000
  • Sundays: Free for everyone.
  • Always Free: Children under 12 and adults over 60.

  • Monday: Closed (including holidays).
  • Tuesday to Saturday: 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (last entry at 6:00 PM).
  • Sunday: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM).
  • Holidays: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM).

Special Closures in 2025

In addition to Mondays, the museum will be closed on the following dates:

  • Good Friday: April 18
  • Labor Day: Thursday, May 1
  • Christmas: Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25
  • New Year’s Eve and Day: Wednesday, December 31, 2025, and Thursday, January 1, 2026
