This September 7 is the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies and, as a commemoration, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) website has launched a list of five cities that stand out for their efforts against environmental pollution, among which Bogotá has been included.

Capital cities such as Warsaw (Poland), Seoul (South Korea), and Bangkok (Thailand) are also part of this list of cities that, recognizing the danger of pollutants in the environment, are taking measures to combat the problem.

The Colombian capital is mentioned by the UNEP as "one of Latin America’s leaders in reducing air pollution" thanks to the actions taken by the District to contribute to environmental care.

The main measure highlighted by the international organization is the plan to fully integrate electric buses into the public transportation system, in addition to the Bogotá Metro, which is also intended to be fully electric, all as part of the Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce environmental pollution by 10% by 2024.

Following, a tweet by the UN Environment Programme sharing the article about what cities are doing to improve air quality:

This plan has been described by the UNEP as an "ambitious" project. In addition, the organization highlighted Mayor Claudia López’s attitude inpromoting the use of bicycles as the main 100% environmentally friendly transportation alternative.

For UNEP, capitals such as those that are part of the list are examples to follow on how to carry out actions that contribute to improving air quality, a call to action that is especially important this September 7 in the hope that more cities around the world can also follow.
