In the most recent report by the global consulting company Arcadis, Colombia’s capital was among the 100 cities in the world that have stood out in 2022 for their advances in sustainability.
The study focused on analyzing the factors framed within the Sustainable Cities Index (SCI), which are 'Planet', 'People', and 'Profit', which are determined according to environmental, social, and economic factors, respectively.
The list was headed by the capital of Norway, Oslo, from which stood out thanks to elements such as its green spaces, transportation, low air pollution, and energy consumption. Oslo was followed by the cities of Stockholm in Sweden and Tokyo in Japan.

Bogotá attracted attention, ranked 78th in the general classification and, above all, achieving 20th place position in the global ‘Planet’ category for its outstanding advances in climate action.
On the relevance of the 'Planet' index, the report highlights that it is one of the most significant elements for positioning in the classification. "Cities that rank high in SCI 2022 tend to have a shared focus on Planet, People, and Profit, in that order of priority. And it is no coincidence that the pillar that most aligns with overall success in the Index is planet," the study explains.
The highlights of Bogotá, according to the report, were its management of greenhouse gas emissions, low energy consumption, and the wide range of green spaces. Areas that have mainly benefited from initiatives such as the city's electric bus fleet and the Mujeres que Verdecen program, among others.
Other highlighted elements were the infrastructure for bicycles (cycling lanes), waste management, and air pollution, in which the study affirms that there are great opportunities for improvement.
It should be noted that some of the main megaprojects being developed in Bogotá in terms of climate action are the Canoas Wastewater Plant (PTAR as per acronym in Spanish) and the Séptima Green Corridor.
These actions have demonstrated Bogotá's commitment to strategies that ensure development that not only cares for the environment, but also for people by ensuring a better quality of life within the city.
